National selection of Italy is over. Ermal Meta and Fabrizzio Moro won the 2018 Sanremo Song Festival and will represent Italy at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon with the song “Non mi avete fatto niente”.
The Grand Final of the 2018 Festival di Sanremo was held at the Ariston Theatre in Sanremo and was broadcasted live on Rai Uno and Rai International. The show was hosted by Claudio Baglioni, Pierfrancesco Favino and Michelle Hunziker. 20 entries battled for the chance to represent the nation in the popular competition.
The national selection had two sections: “Nuove proposte” (Newcomers) and “Campioni”. The Super-finalist were: Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro, Roby Facchinetti & Riccardo Fogli and Nina Zilli. The winner was determined by 40% televote, 30% press vote and 30% expert jury.
The winner song “Non mi avete fatto niente” (English: “You did nothing to me”) was written by the same singer-songwriters Ermal Meta and Fabrizzio Moro and Andrea Febo. The song’s lyrics deal with wars across the world and terrorist attacks in Europe and Middle-East: the cities of: Paris, Nice, London, Cairo and Barcelona, but the song was written consequently to the Manchester Arena bombing.
About Ermal and Fabrizzio
Ermal Meta is an Albanian-Italian singer and songwriter born on 20 April 1981. He was a member of Italian bands Ameba4 and La Fame di Camilla, and participated in 2006 Sanremo Music Festival. Fabrizio Moro is an Italian singer, songwriter and television presenter, born on 9 April 1975. In 2007 he won the Newcomers’ Section of the Sanremo Music Festival with his entry “Pensa”, but failed to win the golden ticket for Helsinki and represent his country in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Italy participated in the first ever edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956, and has won the it twice, in 1963 and 1990.
As a member of the “Big Five”, Italy automatically qualifies to compete in the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held on 12 May 2018 at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal. Good luck!
